Kana Chart Guide

This interactive reference chart displays the Japanese kana syllabaries (Hiragana and Katakana) organized by the traditional gojūon structure. Use the toolbar controls to customize the display and interact with characters.

Script Selection

Choose which kana script to display:

Hiragana

Curved script for native Japanese words

Katakana

Angular script for foreign words and emphasis

Toolbar Controls

Quick toggles for display options:

Pronunciation

Show phonetic guide below each character using your configured style (IPA, English, or Katakana). Change the style in Preferences.

Romaji

Show romanized spelling below each character

Show mastery

Show a small progress bar on each character square with your learning progress for that character. Available when signed in.

Display Settings

Click the gear icon to access layout options:

Section Headers: Show or hide section titles (Gojūon, Dakuon, Yōon)

Axis Labels: Show or hide row labels (K, S, T...) and column headers (a, i, u, e, o)

Voiced Pairs: Place voiced characters (が, ざ, だ...) next to their unvoiced counterparts

The chart remembers these choices. Signed in, they follow your account to every device you study on; signed out, they stay in this browser.

Chart Sections

The chart organizes characters into traditional categories:

Gojūon (五十音): The 46 basic kana characters in a 5×10 grid

Dakuon (濁音): Voiced sounds with the dakuten (゛) mark, such as が, ざ, だ, ば

Handakuon (半濁音): Semi-voiced sounds with handakuten (゜), the ぱ行 row

Yōon (拗音): Contracted sounds combining consonant + y-vowel, such as きゃ, しゅ, ちょ

Open quick detail card with romaji, pronunciation, and link to full character page

Click the menu for additional actions:
