Reading support is furigana over kanji, romaji under the Japanese, which script leads, and the pronunciation guide. How much appears depends on how far along the item is. The props fall away as you stop needing them.
The banner between items
Support moves when your mastery of an item moves, so it only changes on the answer that carried the item far enough. A banner in the gap after that exercise names the change in terms of what you did. Support coming back is not a demotion. Layering the reading on for a few sessions revives a rusty item faster than starting over.
Furigana off. You're reading this kanji on your own.
Bringing furigana back. Muscle memory builds in layers.
What adapts
Furigana
Readings above the kanji. Always on, on tap, or off.
Romaji
An aid under the primary script, never the script itself.
Which script leads
Kana leads early. Words usually written in kana keep leading with kana until the item is well established.
Pronunciation guide
Whether it shows, and in which notation: English respelling, katakana, or IPA.
Judged per item and per skill, so a word you read well but recall poorly can carry different support in each direction.
Rules that always win
Some support would hand you the answer, so the exercise removes it no matter what.
- Reading exercises show no romaji and no pronunciation guide.
- An exercise that asks for a word's reading shows no furigana on the prompt. The reading appears with the answer.
Taking control
Each setting has a System option in study settings. That is what lets the adjustment happen. Choose a value and it holds; the system stops moving that one until you set it back to System.
Furigana, romaji, script
Reachable mid-session. A change lands on the item in front of you.
Pronunciation guide
Set before a session starts and holds for that session.
The trade-off is stated where you choose. Keeping furigana on pauses the transitions, though your reading data is still tracked. Relying on romaji can slow kana recognition. It is a support, not a substitute.
How your choice counts
| Your choice | Recorded at |
|---|---|
| Turn support off early | The harder difficulty you actually saw (a fair fight) |
| Keep support on | The recommended level, so comfort can't inflate your schedule |
